Common toxins

Common toxins to pets include:

  • lilies
  • alfalfa
  • compost
  • poinsettias
  • holly
  • oleander
  • onions
  • garlic
  • macadamia nuts
  • nutmeg
  • raisins/grapes
  • xylatol (found in chewing gum)
  • fruit seeds and pits
  • rat bait
  • slug bait

Dangerous over-the-counter medications

Many human medications are not safe to give pets. Some are safe to dogs and not cats and a proper dose must be discussed with your veterinarian. Proper monitoring of blood chemistry levels should also be done.

These medications include:

  • Tylenol or acetaminophen
  • Ibuprofen or Advil
  • Naproxen or Aleve
  • toothpaste
  • Kaopectate
  • Pepto-Bismol
  • diet medications
