PennHIP is a method of evaluating the hips of a patient that goes beyond an OFA certication of the hips.
This method is a more accurate way to identify laxity in the joints in order to predict hip dysplasia and subsequent arthritis.
PennHIP can be done as early as four months of age, but is at its highest predictability at one year of age, and involves a
series of three radiographs taken under general anesthesia. By understanding the risks of hip dysplasia and subsequent arthritis
early on, we can use a combination of diet, exercise, and (as needed) medications to decrease the progression of the problem
prior to a decrease in the quality of life.
