Parvo Virus

Canine parvo virus affects puppies more often than adults. The virus attacks dividing cells and suppresses white blood cell production.

Symptoms include:

  • vomiting
  • diarrhea (often bloody)
  • lethargy
  • decrease in appetite

Parvo is a highly contagious disease to unprotected dogs. Generally, it takes 3-10 days from the time of exposure until the first symptoms to test positive for parvo. The virus can remain infectious in ground contaminated with fecal material for several months. Extremely hardy, most disinfectants cannot kill the virus, however chlorine bleach is the most effective. Without intense treatment, the victims of parvo usually die from dehydration. Treatment generally consists of supportive care with IV or subcutaneous fluids and antibiotics, as there is no cure.
