Hypoglycemia is a drastic drop in concentration of blood sugars, or glucose, below normal levels. It can be caused by many different factors and should not be ignored. It is most commonly seen in toy breeds and puppies, and is usually brought on by fasting of food. To prevent low blood sugar feed small meals frequently, and try supplementing with moist food if pets have hard time eating hard kibble. Hypoglycemia can also be seen in hunting dogs that are very active for long periods with no feedings.
Signs to look for low blood sugar are:- Wobbly or Weak
- Disoriented
- Shallow breathing
- Glassy Eyes
- Seizures
- Some dogs may even be unconscious
Even though it may not always be life threatening, hypoglycemia can be very serious and symptomatic of very serious medical conditions. If you feel your pet may be suffering from hypoglycemia, please contact your veterinarian immediately.
