Hip Dysplasia

Hip dysplasia literally means abnormal growth or development of the hips. Large breed dogs are more likely to have this disorder. The hip joint is made of a ball and socket. The head of the femur forms the ball and the acetabulum of the pelvis forms the socket. Hip dysplasia is when the ball and socket do not fit smoothly and as a result cause the pet discomfort. Signs may be discrete such as a slow decrease in activity or just overall hind end lameness. X-rays are recommended and pain management treatment may also be necessary.
