Hair Loss

Hair loss in dogs and cats occurs often and there is a broad range of causes. Here are a few of the most common reasons:
  • Flea-associated dermatitis: Usually the hair loss is seen at the base of the tail or between the toes. Treating the flea problem will help to cure the hair loss and any secondary infection.
  • Hot Spots: Intense itching followed by red and inflamed areas on the skin are signs of a hot spot. Secondary infections may occur, but this condition is usually treated with anti-inflammatory medications.
  • Mange: There are 2 types of mange, sarcoptes and demodex. Demodex is naturally found in the hair follicles, but hair loss is seen in some dogs with abnormal immune responses to the mite. This is a generally a genetic disorder and is treated with medicated dips or injections. Sarcoptes is another mite that is contagious, both from pet to pet and to humans. Sarcoptic mange is treated with either injections or oral medication.
  • Allergies: Many dogs and cats are allergic to materials in their environment. Once exposed the pet may scratch frequently, causing hair loss. Treatments include a wide variety of options including: antihistamines, soothing shampoos, anti-inflammatory topical ointments or injections. Some owners even resort to E-collars to prevent chewing.
  • Ringworm: Ringworm is a fungus that grows in dark moist environments and is prevalent in stressed animals. It is characterized by round patches of flaky skin and often hair loss in these regions. It is contagious to both other pets and humans. It is treated with topical medication and/or oral medication.
  • Other: Stress, behavioral or even endocrine problems are also common causes of hair loss.
