Bloat, also known as GDV (gastric dilation and volvulus), is most common in large, deep-chested breeds such as mastiffs, German Shepards, and Great Danes. In the event of a bloat, food or gas has distended the stomach beyond its normal size. Sometimes, for reasons not completely known, the stomach will twist or torse and cut off blood supply to the stomach. This is a life-threatening emergency that can be surgically repaired.
