Anal Glands

Every dog and cat has two anal glands or sacs, sometimes referred to as scent glands. They are located just around the anus at approximately 4 and 8 o'clock. This is how dogs and cats are able to mark their territory and identify each other. The glands are normally expressed during defecation. Often times if they are not completely emptied, these glands can irritate a pet. They can scratch, chew at their tail, scoot or show signs of back pain. Manual expression is required in some animals in order to prevent infection and abscesses.
