ACL Rupture

A drawing of an ACL joint. The rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament can be very painful; however, depending on severity, it may be surgically repaired with success. This ligament is one of several that stabilize the whole knee (stifle) area. It prevents the femur and tibia from rubbing together. It is most commonly torn when the dog twists on his/her hind leg.

Your dog may have ruptured their ACL if they:

  • appear lame
  • are holding their foot off the ground

X-rays and a thorough examination are required to determine the source of lameness.

Contact us if you notice any of the above symptoms in your dog.
